2008 Florida Vacation Part III – The Sand Box

Cassie loves playing in the sand

The second part of our vacation was to spend a couple nights in Miami with Donna.  We stayed at the Double Tree Surfcomber on South Beach.  We payed a bit extra to stay there but it was worth it.  It’s right on the beach and in the middle of everything.  We didn’t need the car even once during our stay.

Greg took Cassie on to the sand for the very first time in Miami.

Our time in Miami was mostly relaxing.  This was Cassie’s first experience with a beach and the ocean!  When she first stepped in the sand she didn’t know what to think.  Soon after that she was playing and having a ball.  We spent our days on the beach, or as Cassie likely thought of it, the world’s best sandbox.  Cassie even liked being in the ocean.  She’d play for a while and then ask to go in the ocean by either pointing and nodding or pointing and doing her sign language for “please.”  How could we resist?

Every morning I was able to get out for a run. This was the first time I ever ran on the beach. At first I didn’t want to but the boardwalk ran out too quickly. When I got on the sand I found that it wasn’t too bad. In fact it was quite nice. The sand was packed down very well close to the hotels and away from the water. It was easy to run on and many people take advantage of it. I learned that there is no escaping the heat of Florida in the summer. Even at 7 AM it was extremely hot out. I came back from one of my runs with my shorts literally dripping with sweat.  Yuck!  It was fun though and running makes me less grumpy and I needed that as we were still learning how to keep Cassie happy away from home.

Although our stay was short it felt to be just about the right amount of time.  We packed up our stuff and headed north to Treasure Island (near Clearwater) armed with new found knowledge of how to travel with a baby.
