I’m sore. I’m very sore. I’ve been weight training at least since I was 14 (more than half my life!) typically putting in 4-5 days per week on weights. I know what muscle soreness feels like. I know what my muscles are capable of. Over the last two days I’ve gotten sore. Not just one muscle group but nearly every muscle in my body. My abs are killing me, my chest is sore (but that’s from weight training), my back is sore, my biceps are sore, and my calves are very sore. This is not normal. I’ve been to the gym only once this week. I think I’m sick but muscle soreness is the only symptom. Mary is complaining of the same thing (she’s sore when and where she should not be sore).
I ran the 3.2 mile loop tonight with Mary. I ran it at a very easy pace and it wasn’t uncomfortable to run. I’m running the Niagara Falls Half this weekend so I was a little concerned that running would be uncomfortable. I’m not shooting for a PR on this run so I’m not upset that I feel the way I do. Still, it’s a mystery wrapped in an enigma embossed with a question mark and delivered by a masked ninja. I’d really like to know why I’m so sore!

Are you insane if you know you are insane? Does the knowledge of your own insanity only prove that you are not actually insane?
I believe I am insane. My most convincing evidence is that I went for a long run on a Sunday morning. Big deal right? I got up at 5 AM to do so. Big deal again. I started running at 6:15 AM. Big deal. It was still pitch black outside. Big deal. It was 47 degrees out. Any of those factors individually isn’t saying much. When you put them all together you have insanity. On 10/14 and again on 10/18 I ran with John. John’s back from a short break he took allowing his leg to heal. While his leg isn’t 100% better he’s able to put in a few miles each week.
On both occasions we ran just over 10 miles. The first run was near my house (country-ish) and the second run was near his house (city). On the first run I had trouble keeping up with him. The rest must have really paid off because this was the first time that I really had to work hard to keep up with him. On the second run we ran comfortably together for almost the entire run.
It was great to be running long runs again and it was great to have someone to run with. I’m looking forward to John’s leg healing enough that we can put in even more miles together.

I got a new PR for my 3.2 mile loop. On Wednesday 10/17 I ran the three mile loop. I was pressed for time so I pushed myself to run fast. It wasn’t just because I was pressed for time that I ran fast — I wanted to record a fast time!
I was very happily surprised when I was about two thirds complete. I looked at my watch and it read 14:30! I new that I was putting in a good time but I didn’t think it was going that well. I used that to motivate me for the last mile or so to keep going fast. I couldn’t keep my pace up though and I’m pretty sure the last mile was slower than the first two.
I reached the mailbox in 22:45, a 7:07 pace! My next goal for that loop is to run it in under a 7 minute average pace.

On Sunday I was out on the road “all alone again” (Metal Church, Anthem to the Estranged). John wasn’t able to join me on a long run due to his injury. I decided to set out on my own anyhow. Since I didn’t have a runny buddy it was really hard to get up at 5 AM to prepare for a long run. So I did what you’d expect, I waited until about 10 AM to start the run!
I saw a lot of road kill Sunday morning… Read the rest of this entry »
