I Like it in the Dark

August 30th, 2007 by greg

Last night John and I ran a 7 (ish) mile tempo run.  We started at 7:45 PM while it was light outside.  It quickly was NOT light outside and we ran most of the run in the dark.  We brought LED packs to help for safety.  Those LED packs seem to be magnets for pavement…  Maybe it was the LEDs, or maybe the low light conditions but the ladies loved us last night.

CompUSA and Seagate are Spammers

August 30th, 2007 by greg

Today I received an ad via email from Seagate.  Based on the address I know with 100% certainty that CompUSA gave them (sold them?) my email address.  I hate spammers.

My Best Long Run

August 29th, 2007 by greg

On Sunday 8/26 John and I planned to run our second 20+ mile long run as part of our training for the 2007 Rochester Marathon. I prepared all week for the run sacrificing an excellent meal at Red Robin and avoiding anything that could possibly harm my performance for the long run. I’m happy to report that almost everything was in my favor on Sunday and I had the best long run of my life.

Finger!

August 24th, 2007 by greg

On Wednesday 8/22 John and I ran an 8.3 mile tempo run.  We had an 8 mile tempo run scheduled for Thursday but we ran it earlier to give our shins an extra day of rest prior to our 20 mile run that is scheduled for Sunday.  The run went well.  During this run we developed what I call the synchronized finger response.

Rollin’, rollin’, rollin’

August 24th, 2007 by mary

Yesterday while doing some work at school, Cassie was laying on her belly getting some tummy time.  My Mom, a friend, Rachel, and I were looking down at Cassie and all of a sudden she just rolled over.  It was so smooth like she had planned it and had been perfecting it for weeks.  She rolled from her tummy onto her back.  When I got home, she did it 4 more times!  She is a pro!  I’m so proud of her!  What a little muscle machine…

Rollin’, rollin’, rollin’…keep that baby rollin’!

Just Keep Running, Just Keep Running…

August 21st, 2007 by greg

Although this blog hasn’t reflected it I have been running, and running, and running.  I’ve run 4 times since my last post and all of the runs were good.

An “Easy” 7 Mile Run

August 14th, 2007 by greg

On Sunday August 12th John and I ran a 7 mile “easy” run.  It was part of our training plan.  The run was not easy for either of us and there are a number of possible reasons.

Course Change Update

August 10th, 2007 by greg

I’ve learned the although we will not be finishing in the stadium this year the stadium will be open to spectators for restrooms.  The finisher area will be on the street and not in the stadium.  The organizers planned it this way in the hopes of keeping people together longer.  Finishing on the street will force spectators and runners to stay closer together for a longer time.

One interesting addition is that there will be a stage and music (live music?) at the finish this year.   Hopefully the marathon committee will find a lot of ways (like the stage idea) to spend the money that they hopefully are NOT giving to Frontier Field this year.

While I don’t feel that this is an improvement over finishing in the stadium I do understand that the marathon planners are doing the best with what is available to them.  If anyone is to blame it’s Frontier Field for not making the construction project known to the marathon committee earlier.  They were notified that there would not be access to the field only a few months prior to the event!  That’s not a lot of notice for an event as large as the Rochester Marathon.  I’m keeping an open mind.  I just might end up preferring this finish.

A Couple of Runs

August 10th, 2007 by greg

This week the training plan calls for three easy 7 mile runs.  We are supposed to run them at a relaxed pace.  It’s hard to run at a relaxed pace sometimes!

Course Change

August 7th, 2007 by greg

I was very disappointed to learn yesterday that the finish of the Rochester Marathon and Half Marathon will not be in Frontier Field for 2007. The marathon committee was forced to change the finish due to construction scheduled for inside the stadium. I do not yet know if the entire stadium will be closed to spectators and runners or if only the finish line has changed.

This is very disappointing. Most of what made this race so special was the finish in the stadium. The stadium is an ideal finishing place as it has ample parking, comfy seats for spectators, a jumbo-tron, plenty of room for runners to enjoy post race treats,an excellent PA system, and much more. Losing access to the stadium this year is a huge blow to the marathon. I truly believe that this is going to hurt registration for the event next year.

I convinced a number of friends and relatives to run the event this year. I raved about how fun it was to finish in the stadium and how convenient it made the event. I feel as though I misled them.

The marathon has the potential to bring in many people from out of town. This represents a big economic opportunity for the city. Out of town runners and spectators spend a lot of money at hotels, restaurants, and other places. I’m not on the race committee and so I do not know the full details but I wish the construction project could be postponed to allow the marathon to continue in the original location. Rochester doesn’t have a lot of excitement. The Rochester Marathon of the few events that can help make a name for Rochester but losing the stadium is a huge loss for 2007.
